Today we have a new moon in Libra, a sign that represents balance, equality, and relationships. But what exactly is balance? Do we ever find true balance in life? And how do relationships play into this?

bal·ance (noun): a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions — Oxford Languages

“Balance is having the right amount — not too much or too little — of any quality, which leads to harmony or evenness.” — vocabulary.com

A blending together of different parts, to make a whole. This is what we aim to do within ourselves. Finding the perfect recipe of what we need in any moment. Because it changes, we change, our environments change, the people around us change. So our formula for balance will change as well. It takes a level of deep listening and getting to know ourselves, to learn what our unique formula is. The more we practice, the better we get, and the quicker we can bring ourselves into balance.

Relationships play a big role in this process. We’re social beings, we were meant to interact and be with one another, and we can only go so far on our own (which by the way is pretty far). We need others to show us parts of ourself that we can’t see on our own, we need people to trigger us so we can see exactly what parts of ourself need some attention, we need others to awaken parts of ourself that otherwise lie dormant. Even if just for a time, the power of another person in our life, whether it’s a friend, lover, partner, teacher, parent or child, is immense.

We’re always being shown something about ourself. The way we react, the emotions that arise, the stories we play over and over in our head, the things we sweep under the rug — it’s all showing us something very important. For anyone who has ever pissed you off, made you cry, or frustrated you beyond belief, they have given you a profound gift. It may not always feel amazing, but they’re showing you a part of yourself that needs love, attention or healing.

The sign opposing Libra is Aries, a sign of independence and self. Life is a balancing act of learning to be in relationship with others, while being in relationship with self. It’s creating time alone, to give yourself space to process, recharge, and come back to self. It’s also about looking at all relationships as teachers, each moment uncovering a new piece about who we are.

This is why the quality of our relationships are so important. Are our interactions with others built for stability and growth? Are we surrounded by those who push us in all the best ways, lovingly and gently, into a better version of ourself? Or do our interactions feel we’re swimming against the current? We have choice in the types of relationships we choose in our life.

The beautiful thing about balance is we can apply it to any area of life — work & play, physical activity & relaxation, money spent & money earned, talking & listening, time alone & time spent with others… you get the picture. So for this new moon, it’s the perfect time to reflect on which area of your life could use more balance. It’s a life long practice, of adjusting here and there.

When you get to the place of never being triggered by another person, are able to feel the full spectrum of your emotions without any attachment or pull, and never experience any anxiety or stress, then you can pour yourself a drink and retire from the game of life. Until then, we’ll all be in it, falling down, messing up, skinning our knees a few times, trying to figure out how the heck we balance ourselves out. And that’s perfectly okay.
